Evaluating your process will help you specify a plate-and-frame heat exchanger that is right for your application. Use these 10 tips to specify your next plate heat exchanger and maximize its service life. It is no surprise that plate-and-frame heat exchangers (PHEs) offer good heat transfer. But, there are several important factors you must keep in mind as a specifier or user of PHEs. For instance, if the PHE is to be used in conjunction with a cooling tower, it should be designed for the water treatment chemicals being used to treat the tower water. Also, it is easier to prevent a heat excha …

Minimizing Boiler Short Cycling: Lessons from WARE
Ware's recent newsletter gives their readers a tip to save thousands of dollars!A boiler cycle includes a firing interval, a post-purge, an idle period, a pre-purge and a return to firing. Boiler short cycling takes place when an oversized boiler quickly fulfills process or space heating demands and then shuts down until heat is required again.Boiler efficiency can be calculated over the cycle duration by taking the useful heat provided by the boiler and dividing it by the useful heat plus losses. Boiler efficiency is reduced when short cycling occurs or when several boilers are operating at low firing rates. …

How Gas Trains Contribute to Safe Boiler Function
{Courtesy of Ware, Inc. Newsletter "The Grime"} - Boilers are great tools. They are able to generate steam in a manner that helps industrial and commercialindustries flourish and keeps households comfortable. However, when not maintained or operatedproperly, boilers can be dangerous. Clean Your Linkage! - From the Grime Newsletter
Just like the engine in your car, boilers have need of a certain fuel-to-air ratio for proper combustion. Too little air results in incomplete combustion, but too much creates wastefully heated air that gets exhausted through the flue. Since changing factors such as ambient temperature, pressure, and humidity can cause variations in air quality, it is prudent to add an excess amount of air to account for these variations. To add the proper amount of air to mix with the fuel, controls are used to introduce air to the system at the burner. Of the boilers currently in use in the United States, ma …

The New ND-Double Wall Plate is Here!!!
With our newest plate, the ND double-wall series, GEA PHE Systems has successfully combined a high efficiency heat transfer plate with an extremely reliable double-wall design that eliminates any risk of two fluids intermixing as they pass through the heat exchanger. This series combines a pair of identical heat transfer plates that are laser welded together at the inlet and outlet port holes to form a small leakage gap between the two plates. In the event of erosion due to harsh media, a gasket or weld defect due to pressure changes, this clever solution ensures no intermixing of the two non …

There are major changes taking place within the energy production industry in the US. Multiple factors are driving these changes such as environmental regulations and the newly found abundance of natural gas.The new environmental regulations have put tighter restrictions on pollutants and emissions from coal fired power plants which have led to many being decommissioned or converted to naturalgas fired operation. At the recent ÔElectric Power ConferenceÕ held in Chicago the keynote speaker stated Òit is virtually impossible to build new or add capacity to a coal fired plant todayÓ.The new abun …

The Dog Leg Vent Pipe: A Potential Problem for Deaerators
Thanks to Kansas City Deaerator for providing some of this informationMany deaerators in the past have been built with vent piping that protrudes through the water box to the external portion of the heater allowing the oxygen to be eliminated from the deaerator. Many manufacturers provided a dog leg type vent with a miter joint which typically fails due to inadequate welding where the vent pipe supports the valve plate. This can cause significant loss or performance and effect your energy savings long term. Annual inspections of the welds are recommended to detect such failures or you may be b …

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has denied a petition from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for an extension in releasing the MACT boiler rules. The MACT, or Maximum Achievable Control Technology, rules are designed to control the release of toxic air emissions such as cadmium, dioxin, furans, formaldehyde, and hydrochloric acid to name a few. Current observers believe that these new standards will be significantly different from the EPA’s April 2010 proposal. The industry is watching these developments closely as the new rules could impose unrealistic or co …
